Frequently Asked Questions

There really isn't much in the way of questions to answer just yet, but I thought I would at least touch on the basics here. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact me.

How did this project get started?

It all started with me lurking on the Linux Audio Users mailing list, when an interesting discussion came up about possible clones for Sonic Foundry Acid on Linux. Everything snowballed from there.

Eventually, I ended up proposing a web application where people could submit their loops for others to use. That's when the real design work finally got started. From there, we added a way to control metadata, and a way to make it easily searchable. This searchability of media files is hopefully what will make the OMRL a "killer app" for Linux-based musicians.

What license do you plan to use for available media files?

There is a lot of debate on this topic, but it seems we are all leaning toward using one of the Creative Commons licenses. Which one to use is what is still up for debate. This would be a good time to join the mailing list if you want your opinion to be heard.

It has been generally agreed, however, that everything put up for download from the OMRL should all be placed under one license. That way, you know exactly how you can use something without having to wade through use condition clauses every time you download something.

Is there a timeline for completion?

Not as such, no, but I do intend to fully plan out the system before I start writing code. Even the language to use is up for debate, but I will probably use PHP due to my familiarity with it, even if I feel it has lots of shortcomings. Most of them can be overcome with a little work.
